Wow you know I actually almost forgot that I was online and not in a physical community.....it is so beautiful here and I felt so welcome and at home! In answer to Lynn Ciesielczyk's guest book entry question, Yes, people who are both Pagan and Christian are welcome in the Summerlands, providing that they understand that we are a Pagan Community and they don't try to proseltyze or 'convert'(aka 'annoy') the other members. Our Celtic ancestors saw the Christ story as just another retelling of their own tales of the Good God, the Mother and the Young Son. They recognized the mythical thread that runs through all the religions as being the same essence, and we here at Summerlands also recognize that Spirit is larger than any one 'manmade religion and it's baggage'. We choose the Celtic Pagan/Druidic Spiritual Path because that is the one that resonates most deeply within us, but we do not denigrate others' religions as long as they harm no one and are not forced on anyone else. Well, maybe I was a little early in my praise. I have just been to the sign up process for members and I find that there is a price tag? What ever happened to sevice? providing spiritual assistance without a price tag? If you charge then you fall victim to the materialist paradigm and sooner or later you are corrupted by it. It is money and capatilism that has led to the systematic raping of the planet and the near destruction of the eco-system. Its time people started thinking about what they can provide for other peoples enlightenment, without there being a credit card karma check somehwere in the process. Those who need the most help are being excluded by your lack of trust in the process and the goddess and ultimately you will relaise this. Whether this is before or after you reap the rewards of such disrespect is up to you. See this message as a warning...She sees everything and remembers everything. What good will money do you then?

In response to Cerrigddu: From time to time we hear the same old whine of 'How can you possibly charge for "spirituality"???' To that I respond. We're not charging for 'spirituality', but let's face some hard, real facts. Running a site costs money. Server space costs money. Scripts, hardware, and software all cost money. Programmers cost money. Graphic artists cost money. This site costs literally hundreds of dollars a month to run (and that's not including additional purchases for the site, that's just the ongoing monthly costs and maintenance). And all these costs don't even begin to cover the exterior service projects that we are working on (all of which also cost money in the real world). For the most part, Searles and I have supported this site out of our own pocket, at our considerable expense, even since we opened it in 1996. Why should WE have to foot the bill by ourselves for a community that everybody who joins enjoys and benefits from and even those who don't join seem to enjoy using the 'free' parts of? The idea that the laborer is not worthy of his hire only when it applies to 'spiritual' matters is ridiculous. You'd have no problem with paying a doctor to heal you, a lawyer to represent you, a school teacher to educate you on secular matters; yet you seem to have a problem with the idea of contributing $5 a month to help defer some of the overhead expenses of a site that you admittedly found good. And you resent any possibility of financially suppporting a Druidic/Pagan clergy so that they might be able to actually spend their time and energy BEING a Druidic/Pagan clergy rather than having to spend 10 hours a day at a mundane job and THEN come home to spend another 8 hours ministering and teaching for FREE??? We have bent over backwards to make sure that anyone who wanted to belong to The Summerlands could do so, even if it meant waving the membership fee in cases of financial hardship. It really upsets me when I get posts and emails like yours condeming us when you know nothing about the actual workings of the site or the costs involved therein. We're very proud of what we have built here and will continue to build here. And yes, we will continue to charge a membership fee and also charge for classes. We also accept donations to the cause. Hopefully, one day the site will actually be able to pay for itself rather than Searles and I having to foot the bill for the majority of it ourselves month after month after month. Thanks for the 'warning'. You're right, 'She' does see everything and we're very happy with what we have presented for her viewing. Let each of us be judged and honored for their contributions on their own merit. You might want to climb out of your ivory tower and get your hands dirty down here with the real work in the real world. Fantasy and fluff are free. Real stuff takes time, effort, and money. PS: That WAS the OBOD that you said you belonged to? From their own page in their own words... "For more information about the course see the Introduction to the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids. The Introductory Package is £10 for the UK and Europe, US$25 for the rest of the world. All credit card transactions are charged in £ sterling." So, apparently, even your own organization charges for their information and membership. Please, don't come onto our site and boards and spread hyprocrisy. Thank you.

We periodically receive messages from people who think that paying for membership is outrageous. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinions and a good thing it is; else the world would be very dull and boring. The truth of the matter is that most organizations charge membership dues (or they receive contributions). This is to cover the costs of having an organization. That's what charities do. That's what social clubs and organizations do. That's what civic organizations do. That's also what churches and some intentional communities do. That's especially what schools do, as well as what libraries, consultants, professional societies and seminaries do. The Summerlands attempts to be all of these things to its members in cyberspace and real life. In general, those who've joined us agree. We are a community of friends and a sheltered place away from the chaos of the open web. Those who can make contributions do make contributions to The Summerlands. Some of these contributions are in the form of membership dues. Other contributions are donations of time, work, or money. Still other contributions come in the form of creative activities like programming, writing and art, as well as in managing forums on a variety of subjects. All in all, the members of The Summerlands make our community what it is. They ARE The Summerlands. We also recognize that some people will only visit us as guests. It is for that reason that we've provided a Public Library, a Crossroads, a Bruidhean, a Hall of Remembrance, and a newsletter for their use. When I say we, I mean that the people of The Summerlands have paid for the hospitality that is shown to visitors. We do not expect guests to pay. On the other hand we also expect guests to follow the ancient rules of hospitality. These just mean being civil and not destroying or demeaning things that have be provided by our people. Those that abuse these simple rules are shown the door and asked to go elsewhere to acquire some skills in civility. If you are a person who wants to join us in our work of friendship, growth and community then please do not let money be a barrier. There's plenty of work to do instead. If you wish to enjoy our hospitality as a guest, then be welcome at our fires and receive the graciousness that you yourself also provide. If you need shelter from the storms of life, then let us know how we can help you. If you have strengths to help others, then join us in our common and extraordinary efforts. Currently I am a Wiccan who just joined a Gardenian Coven but I am particuarly drawn to Celtic art and Gods. Like I say I am new so I try to absorb everything. Greetings to all here. I am an atheist, but am friendly to all who practice healthy and life-affirming ways. I especially wish to compliment Jenny on her courageous speaking of the truths of history. It is not necessary to invent a pedigree to have a real and honest religion. I think that simply to be a creative human being like all that have gone before us is enough, provided we manifest our good ideas and extend the hand of kindness wherever we can. History, myth, archaeology, the study and fascination with human nature are all consuming interests of mine. From the painted caves to the present day people are pretty much the same when it really matters. Lest you find yourselves feeling pity for someone who does not believe in magick the way you do, there is magick (and magic) a-plenty for me in the world as it is. I do believe there is no finer miracle than the natural world--unless it is the wonder with which I percieve it. I wish all of you well. Noble Savage.

Yesterday, I've spent time reading about the services you offered, projects that you plan to enterprise for the future. --- The one thing, that helps me as an individual is the .onelist group. ( Ogmios project ) I applied for this one... and enjoy very much what you have done to it. Now, I've clearly decided to focus on the Irish Language - and just like believing heart and soul about wicca... I can't live without listening to the language spoken.
